It’s not every day you come across an MR2 and we ask ourselves, why? From its inception in the 80’s, the MR2 was a very good compact car in terms of performance and handling. With the mid mounted engine and lightweight chassis the car was very nimble. It was definitely a hit. The twin-cam motor, mid-ship layout at an affordable price was all that was needed to bring the masses. This was also during the time when Ferraris and Porsches had similarly designed cars albeit they were in a higher class. These days though, enthusiasts prefer the AE86, leaving the MR2 as the unsung hero.

This is Evan’s ride, a 1990 MR2 with the 2nd Generation 3SGE engine. The 2.0L motor is good for 154bhp and 137lb.ft, stock figures, which is good for that sporty daily ride.

The back, where he, unlike most others, spends most of his time getting sweaty and greasy. A Greddy SP exhaust has replaced the OEM just for that note and extra performance.

Rota Grids, 17x8 +35 front and 17x9 +37 rear, are the wheels of choice here and it sits very well on Intrax springs and Tokico 5-way adjustable struts with TRD upper mounts. To ensure that the suspension works to its fullest, all of the stock bushings were ditched and an Energy Suspension polyurethane kit was installed.

Don’t think for a minute that this is the last we shall see of this MR2. Plans are already in play for a 4th Generation 3SGTE Engine swap and quite possibly, a GT28 RS Turbo kit. Oh yes, we will definitely be looking forward to it!
